A brief guide to thinking clearly about finding and identifying useful, healthy and effective enlightened spiritual teachers and thereby avoiding chaos, mess and misery resulting from common delusions in this complex field.
Myths, legends and stories abound about spiritual teachers, enlightened guides and gurus - it's a culturally acceptable phenomenon which enshrines the psychological bent towards adulation, fetishism, sensationalism and subservience. I am not here to encourage you to knock the local icons, which not so long ago would lead to a period of involuntary cell contemplation whilst hanging from artfully crafted thumb screws.
I assume that you are a spiritual seeker and that is why you are listening to my words. Until my own Enlightenment, on 19th June 2000, I was a spiritual seeker who was involved in the very messy path of looking for bona fide and useful spiritual guidance, techniques and progress.
The market place for spiritual teaching and teachers, like any commercial field, is full of cheap knock-offs, unwholesome wholesale rip-offs, heavily promoted fakes and mafia-like cartels which pass seekers from one clip joint to another. If you don't know anything about this then you are both lucky but potentially vulnerable. Some aberrant personalities have absolutely convinced themselves that they are the prophesied "He Who is to Come" and whilst it would be convenient to have a full-time super hero cleaning up the streets, their brand of messianic tends to be "austerity is for suckers, hand over the cash, chilled champagne and cigars" - in other words it is self-serving. Woe, betide anyone who ends up in such centre or one of its many spin-offs and franchises. Unfortunately, while there are many well meaning individuals and groups, there is a lot of naivety because real spirituality is in short supply and so consequently ignorance abounds. Consider how many people buy diamonds each week yet have no clue whether they have bought fake.
I want to save you from the mess, the mud and the mire that I had tumbled into as a young and naive seeker. This online audio class "The Good Guru Guide" offers you principles by which to assess any spiritual teacher. It's not a fake guide which promotes a particular teacher - there are plenty of those kind "his parents knew that he was special because he was a lovely baby, a passing beggar gave a blessing and after seeing a succession of fortune tellers, one particularly successful psychic said that he had all of the signs of being The One". But it is a guide which allows you to think clearly about what it is that you want, spotting and avoiding unhealthy teachers and teachings and avoiding delusions not matter how popular they are in certain quarters. That's pretty much what will be covered in this class "The Good Guru Guide: An Enlightened Approach to Spiritual Teacher Assessment" and subsequent classes in this season's "Successful Spiritual Seeker Series".
